This years keynoters
On Wednesday, August 4th, we were notified that Fernando Funes would not be able to attend the NOFA Summer Conference as our Saturday night keynoter. On Thursday we launched a nationwide search for someone to fill his shoes.
We are very happy to introduce you to Catherine Murphy, documentary film director, Cuban studies expert, and sustainable food advocate, to speak about the Cuban sustainable agriculture movement of the early '90's.
Catherine Murphy, originally from the Bay Area, has spent the last twenty years living in Latin America, documenting Cuba and the Cuban sustainable agriculture movement. Catherine holds a Master's degree from the University of Havana, and has published research on urban gardening through policy forums such as Food First, one of the leading sustainable food policy organizations in the U.S. Catherine served as a liason to multiple Cuba-U.S. partnership programs throughout the 1990's, including Global Exchange, and the School for International Training (based in Vermont). Catherine was originally introduced to the community gardening movement by Catherine Sneed, of the Garden Project, in San Francisco, where she worked with the San Fransisco County jail system, helping inmates use the community garden as a form of personal rehabilitation and growth. In 2006, Catherine spent a year as a producer for TeleSur, the Latin American counterpart to U.S. news stations such as CNN. She has been headquartered for the past six years in Caracas, Venezuela. Catherine has directed and produced a number of documentary films, and is currently working on a film project which documents the testimony of Cuban literacy volunteers, who were engaged in a nation-wide successful adult literacy campaign in the 1960's. The film is scheduled for release next year. Catherine considers Fernando Funes and his late wife, Marta Monsote, very dear and close friends and mentors to her throughout her life working in the sustainable food community in Cuba. Catherine brings a rich and diverse background to the NOFA Summer Conference. She cares deeply about the global food crisis, sustainable agriculture, and has demonstrated a strong commitment to broad global social issues. While we are disappointed that Dr. Funes will not join us, we are very grateful to Catherine for stepping in, and we look forward to welcoming her in Amherst! Catherine will also substitute for Dr. Funes' scheduled workshops.
Sally Fallon Morell
Journalist, chef, nutrition researcher, homemaker and community activist, Sally Fallon Morell is the author of the best-selling Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats. This well-researched, though-provoking guide to traditional foods contains a startling message: Animal fats and cholesterol are not villains but vital factors in the diet, necessary for normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels.
Sally's lifelong interest in the subject of nutrition began in the early 1970s when she read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price. Called the "Charles Darwin of Nutrition," Price traveled the world over studying healthy primitive populations and their diets. The unforgettable photographs contained in his book document the beautiful facial structure and superb physiques of isolated groups consuming only whole, natural foods. Price noted that all of these diets contained a source of good quality animal fat, which provided numerous factors necessary for the full expression of our genetic potential and optimum health. Fallon Morell applied the principles of the Price research to the feeding of her own children, and proved for herself that a diet rich in animal fats, and containing the protective factors in old fashioned foodstuffs like cod liver oil, liver and eggs, make for sturdy cheerful children with a high immunity to illness.
When the youngest of her four children became old enough to attend school full time, Sally applied her writing skills and training in French and Mediterranean cooking to the subject of nutrition and began work on a comprehensive cookbook that would combine accurate information on nutrition with delicious, practical recipes. She teamed with Mary Enig, Ph.D., an expert of world renown in the subject of lipids and human nutrition. Now is its second edition, the best-selling Nourishing Traditions has stimulated the public health and medical communities to take a new look at the importance of traditional foods and preparation techniques, and to reexamine the many myths about saturated fats and cholesterol. The book places special emphasis on the feeding of babies and children to ensure optimal development during their crucial growing years.
Sally and her colleague Dr. Enig are frequent contributors to holistic health publications. Their work is widely respected for providing accurate and understandable explanations of complicated subjects in the field of nutrition and health. Several articles on the dangers of modern soy products have generated intense controversy in the health food industry
Fallon Morell is founding president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (www.westonaprice.org) and editor of the Foundation's quarterly magazine, as well as the founder of A Campaign for Real Milk (www.realmilk.com). She is also president and owner of NewTrends Publishing, serving as editor and publisher of The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD; The Untold Story of Milk by Ron Schmid, ND; The Yoga of Eating by Charles Eisenstein; The Fourfold Path to Healing by Thomas Cowan, MD; and The Whole Soy Story (February 2005) by Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD.
Sally's other book, Eat Fat Lose Fat (Penguin, Hudson Street Press, 2005), co-authored with Dr. Mary Enig, includes three diet plans-Quick and Easy Weight Loss, Health Recovery and Everyday Gourmet-along with many delicious coconut-based recipes from around the world.
Sally received a Bachelors Degree in English with honors from Stanford University, and a Masters Degree in English with high honors from UCLA. She has served as president of her local citizens group and is actively involved in community landscaping projects. She speaks French and Spanish. Her interests include music, gardening, metaphysics . . . and of course cooking. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband, energy healer Geoffrey Morell, where her children, now grown, enjoy coming home from time to time for a good meal.
